Radius House is a context-specific architectural residence and the first residential project developed from the ground up, by Los Angeles-based design studio Pentagon. Radius House is located at 640 Milwood Avenue in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles. The 4.5-square-foot, four-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom home features sculptural interiors and articulated facades that give it a distinctive presence in an area known for expressive residential design. Clear angles, curved surfaces and large picture windows throughout the two-story building create unique moments of dialogue between inside and out. The home wraps around a central courtyard on three sides. Lush landscaping by Sarita Jaccard Design surrounds a raised basalt slab that houses a pool, sundeck and fire pit designed as a “bento box” for outdoor activities. Inside, a cantilevered grand staircase surrounds a central atrium lit from above by a large walk-up Oculus skylight on the roof terrace. Inside the residence, finishes were chosen to express visual contrasts, human scale and refined materials. The walnut paneling of the curved shelves in the entry continues through the kitchen to the grand staircase and central atrium, and extends up to the roof. Venetian plaster walls give the residence a luminous continuity and a handcrafted quality. The heated concrete on the second floor and the European white oak wood on the second floor create a sense of comfort and warmth in both the common and private spaces.
